Anne Hathaway signed to play Catwoman

Hollywood Reporter broke the news yesterday that actress Anne Hathaway will be the next in a long line of actresses to don the cat suite in the next Batman flick, The Dark Knight Rises.

The star of The Devil Wears Prada and Brokeback Mountain joins Julie Newmar, Eartha Kitt, Lee Meriweather, Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry in taking on what has become a highly sought after role for young Hollywood actresses. Others contenders this time around were Jessica Biel and Keira Knightley.

It was revealed in the Catwoman movie that there have been several catwomen over the years in the Batman universe. Hathaway's character will be the Selina Kyle incarnation, the same character played by Pfeiffer. Director Christopher Nolan will take a slightly different approach to the character, with his signature darker edge.

Via The Hollywood Reporter:
Nolan and his team of writers (he wrote the screenplay with his brother Jonah Nolan, from a story by Nolan and David S. Goyer) have taken some inspiration for their take on Batman from the classic Batman: Year One storyline by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli, by way of asking, “What if the story continued?”

The Catwoman in Year One was a prostitute-dominatrix who helps Batman even as he inadvertently inspires her to don a costume and embark on a life of crime.

Warner gave no indication if this was Nolan’s take on the character.
HR also reports that actor Tom Hardy (Chinzon, Star Trek: Nemesis) has been signed to play the maniacal steroid case Bane. Read the full story here.
