Obama Hosts Pride Reception Tonight as Pressure Mounts to Evolve on Marriage Equality

President Barack Obama campaigned three years ago claiming to be a fierce advocate for LGBT equality. Our community helped him raise millions of dollars and turned out in record numbers to put him in office. His record on moving our fight forward has received mixed reviews.

We got Hate Crimes legislation passed and DADT repeal could be certified this summer. But ENDA was allowed to die in congress and there seems to be no sign of resurrection any time soon.

When it comes to Marriage Equality, the president says he is against discriminatory laws that violate the rights of LGBT people, but marriage is in the purview of the states. He famously said that his views are "evolving", but many claim he's trying to have it both ways, giving liberals hope, while not alienating more conservative elements of the Democratic party and independent voters.

With the huge step forward on passage of New York's Marriage Equality Act, which more than doubled the number of gay and lesbian couples eligible to legally marry in the U.S. and the start of the 2012 election cycle, the president can no longer afford to straddle the fence.

The Washington Post's Sheryl Gay Stolberg wrote Tuesday:
For months, Mr. Obama, who has in the past opposed same-sex marriage, has said his views are “evolving.” But last week’s vote in Albany has intensified pressure on the president to say where he stands, particularly after remarks he made at a Manhattan fund-raiser disappointed and confused many gay rights advocates, including some of his most ardent supporters.
Some are now comparing Mr. Obama unfavorably with Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, a Democrat who championed the New York bill and helped get it passed in a Republican-controlled Senate.
Some of us have speculated that Obama may be deliberately holding back until after the election and will then give his full support for marriage equality and the rest of the laundry list of promises he made to us. Only time will tell if this is the case. Before you rush to judgement, remember how it all went down with DADT repeal. While the LGBT community railed against his inaction, the president was meeting with activists, military leaders and congressional and senate leaders behind the scenes.

For the sake of argument, let's say that Obama has a plan and doesn't want to tip his hand, but his re-election is by no means a sure thing. With so much at stake, can we afford to gamble on our rights?

AARP Launches Web Page for LGBT Seniors

I have a confession to make. As much as it pains me to admit it, it's time to come clean about a secret I've hidden for far too long.

(Pause for dramatic deep breath)

Here goes... I am a member of AARP. I know, I'm as shocked as you are, 'cause I look so young, right? RIGHT?!

This week I have reason to feel a little better about being a member of the golden oldies. AARP has chosen Pride Month to launch a new web page on it's site dedicated to the unique needs of LGBT seniors.

Via press release:
AARP has added a page to their website just for LGBT seniors to address he unique needs of our aging community. The organization of golden oldies says via press release, “We are proud to provide diverse, expert voices on topics that are important to all Americans 50+, including members of the LGBT community,” said Hugh Delehanty, SVP & Editor In Chief of AARP’s media properties.  “AARP understands that while all Americans 50+ share the same goals of aging with dignity and peace of mind, each of the communities in our lives offers its own challenges, opportunities and contributions towards helping us get there.  We couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate national Pride month than to launch this portal, which we hope will help members of the LGBT community and their loved ones get access to important information and relevant insights from experts and each other.”
The new www.aarp.org/pride portal offers targeted news, trivia quizzes and information on issues that especially matter to the LGBT community in areas including healthcare, retirement planning, caregiving, taxation, employment discrimination and more. Visitors can access AARP’s groundbreaking coverage of relevant topics, including an article from the latest issue of AARP The Magazine examining—three decades after the emergence of HIV/AIDS—–the new face of AIDS: people over 50.  The portal also features AARP’s 20-part multimedia package, The Stonewall Riots: 40 Years Later, A Milestone Anniversary, which won accolades from the LGBT community and mainstream media for its comprehensive coverage of an important chapter in the American civil rights movement.

This is a great thing for our aging community. But I promise you, if you ever call me a senior citizen, I'll hit you with my walker!

Va. Delegate Bob Marshall: "Homosexual behavior undermines the American economy."

Pride Flag flies at Federal Reserve in Richmond
As I reported last week, the Federal Reserve Bank in Richmond, Va. began flying the rainbow flag in front of it's office building to recognize Pride Month. Virginia ranks among the top homophobic states in the union, having passed a constitutional ban on any legal recognition of same-sex relationships of any legal contracts that might protect the rights of same-sex couples.

The bank chose to fly the flag for the entire month at the request of its LGBT employees. Naturally the bigots are up in arms over the fed's decision to celebrate the gays. Virginia's most vocal homophobe, Delegate Bob Marshall, who wrote the failed legislation to exempt the Virginia National Guard from DADT repeal last year, wrote to the Bank, requesting that they take down the flag.

In his letter, Marshall wrote, “homosexual behavior ‘celebrated’ by your Richmond’s Federal Reserve Bank . . . undermines the American economy, is a class six felony in Virginia, shortens lives, adds significantly to illness, increases health costs, promotes venereal disease, and worsens the population imbalance relating to the number of workers supporting the beneficiaries of America’s Social Security and Medicare Programs.”

Fed spokesman Jim Strader says the bank will not remove the flag, telling The Washington Post, "it represents the bank’s commitment to diversity and inclusion, which we support.”

Marshall's comments have not gone unnoticed by Virginia's LGBT advocacy groups. The Group LGBT Democrats of Virginia wrote to Marshall condemning his characterization of the LGBT community, saying, "We contend that there is no difference in the lifespan or health of responsible members of the LGBT community when compared to responsible heterosexuals, and that such language as you have used to support your opposition to the flying of the rainbow flag is inflammatory, intolerant, and deceptive. Moreover, your claim of moral superiority seems to blind you to the intolerance you have expressed... Delegate Marshall, we call on you stop perpetuating ignorance and falsehoods. It’s time to stop lying to the people of Virginia."

Equality Virginia responded to Marshall's vitriol, saying, “The Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond should receive accolades for its decision to recognize and celebrate its GLBT employees, customers and vendors during Pride month. It’s a private business and should be able to make its own personnel and corporate policy decisions without Bob Marshall’s guidance or the Family Foundation’s approval.”

Home Depot Tells Anti-Gay Hate Group to Kiss Off

Jack McFarland: "Say something lesbionic."

Bonnie: "Home Depot!"

Jack: "Boy George, you are gay!"

-Sean Hayes and Rosie O'Donnell on Will & Grace.

The haters at AFA are busier than ever this time of year, what with all us evil homos running around flaunting our sinful lifestyle this month. They've even taken to boycotting businesses that support a diverse workplace and community. Their latest target is Home Depot. This comes via Right Wing Watch.
For months, the American Family Association has been running a boycott against Home Depot because the company "has chosen to sponsor and participate in numerous gay pride parades and festivals."
Today, the AFA's Executive Vice President, Buddy Smith, traveled to a Home Deport board meeting to present the company with a petition bearing nearly a half-million names of those who have vowed to stop shopping at Home Deport stores until the company decides to "remain neutral in the culture war."
But according to this update Smith gave to Bryan Fischer today, it sounds like the Home Depot Chairman Frank Blake basically told the AFA to take a hike and reiterated their commitment to promoting diversity.  Smith was especially troubled by this stance because, as everyone knows, "those who are caught in this trap of homosexuality are in the clasp of Satan."
Thanks for pointing that out guys. I always have trouble with the clasp.

WTF: White House Launches "Winning the Future" LGBT Web Page

Okay, folks, this is one of those Good News/No News items that is important enough to mention, but doesn't really mean much.

On Wednesday the White House unveiled a new page on its web site called Winning the Future: President Obama and the LGBT Community, where the president's official Web Meister has posted a laundry list of things The Big O has done for the LGBT community, like signing DADT Repeal, Hospital Visitation Rights, and declaring DOMA unconstitutional and refusing to defend it against court challenges.

George Harrison and Gerald Ford, WIN Photo Op
But what about that name, "Winning the Future"? What does that even mean? It may look good on a bumper sticker, but it reminds me of what happened back in 1974 during the Gerald Ford administration, when the country was facing an equally deflated economy. Ford's solution was to launch the Whip Inflation Now campaign and had the government produce and distribute millions of bright red buttons with the  WIN logo for Americans to wear proudly. The only economic stimulus it provided was to the novelty button industry.

Can we expect Obama to start passing out rainbow-colored WTF buttons at his campaign stops, because I would totally wear one.

What is most significant about the site is what it doesn't say, specifically, whether or not the prez now supports Marriage Equality. White House press secretary Jay Carney told The Advocate yesterday, "The president has said in the past what his position is. It hasn’t changed. And if it changes, I’m sure he’ll let you all know."

To quote my favorite bumper sticker, "Evolve, already!!"

This is one of those feel-good moves that politicians do during a re-election campaign season; trying to please  one constituency without pissing off another. He's trying to send the message to the LGBT community, whose money and support he needs now more than ever, that we are better off with him than without him. He also wants to avoid alienating potential voters who may not be totally on board with the gay marriage thing. It's really quite a contortion act. I hope he's got a good chiropractor.

Yesterday's unveiling comes on the heals of Tuesday's Presidential Proclamation, where he declared that June is LGBT Pride Month, as if we didn't know that already. I guess he was trying in his own way to explain to the heteros what all the weekend traffic jams this month are all about.

Happy Pride Month Everybody!

Presidential Proclamation: June is LGBT Pride Month

The White House
Office of the Press Secretary

Presidential Proclamation--Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month

-------
BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA
A PROCLAMATION
The story of America's Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community is the story of our fathers and sons, our mothers and daughters, and our friends and neighbors who continue the task of making our country a more perfect Union. It is a story about the struggle to realize the great American promise that all people can live with dignity and fairness under the law. Each June, we commemorate the courageous individuals who have fought to achieve this promise for LGBT Americans, and we rededicate ourselves to the pursuit of equal rights for all, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
Since taking office, my Administration has made significant progress towards achieving equality for LGBT Americans. Last December, I was proud to sign the repeal of the discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. With this repeal, gay and lesbian Americans will be able to serve openly in our Armed Forces for the first time in our Nation's history. Our national security will be strengthened and the heroic contributions these Americans make to our military, and have made throughout our history, will be fully recognized.
My Administration has also taken steps to eliminate discrimination against LGBT Americans in Federal housing programs and to give LGBT Americans the right to visit their loved ones in the hospital. We have made clear through executive branch nondiscrimination policies that discrimination on the basis of gender identity in the Federal workplace will not be tolerated. I have continued to nominate and appoint highly qualified, openly LGBT individuals to executive branch and judicial positions. Because we recognize that LGBT rights are human rights, my Administration stands with advocates of equality around the world in leading the fight against pernicious laws targeting LGBT persons and malicious attempts to exclude LGBT organizations from full participation in the international system. We led a global campaign to ensure "sexual orientation" was included in the United Nations resolution on extrajudicial execution -- the only United Nations resolution that specifically mentions LGBT people -- to send the unequivocal message that no matter where it occurs, state-sanctioned killing of gays and lesbians is indefensible. No one should be harmed because of who they are or who they love, and my Administration has mobilized unprecedented public commitments from countries around the world to join in the fight against hate and homophobia.
At home, we are working to address and eliminate violence against LGBT individuals through our enforcement and implementation of the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. We are also working to reduce the threat of bullying against young people, including LGBT youth. My Administration is actively engaged with educators and community leaders across America to reduce violence and discrimination in schools. To help dispel the myth that bullying is a harmless or inevitable part of growing up, the First Lady and I hosted the first White House Conference on Bullying Prevention in March. Many senior Administration officials have also joined me in reaching out to LGBT youth who have been bullied by recording "It Gets Better" video messages to assure them they are not alone.
This month also marks the 30th anniversary of the emergence of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, which has had a profound impact on the LGBT community. Though we have made strides in combating this devastating disease, more work remains to be done, and I am committed to expanding access to HIV/AIDS prevention and care. Last year, I announced the first comprehensive National HIV/AIDS Strategy for the United States. This strategy focuses on combinations of evidence-based approaches to decrease new HIV infections in high risk communities, improve care for people living with HIV/AIDS, and reduce health disparities. My Administration also increased domestic HIV/AIDS funding to support the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program and HIV prevention, and to invest in HIV/AIDS-related research. However, government cannot take on this disease alone. This landmark anniversary is an opportunity for the LGBT community and allies to recommit to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and continuing the fight against this deadly pandemic.
Every generation of Americans has brought our Nation closer to fulfilling its promise of equality. While progress has taken time, our achievements in advancing the rights of LGBT Americans remind us that history is on our side, and that the American people will never stop striving toward liberty and justice for all.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim June 2011 as Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month. I call upon the people of the United States to eliminate prejudice everywhere it exists, and to celebrate the great diversity of the American people.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this thirty-first day of May, in the year of our Lord two thousand eleven, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and thirty-fifth.
              BARACK OBAMA
