What to write about when all the news is boring?

Every weekday morning I get up at 7am, have some coffee, let the ducks out and peruse my news feeds, e-mails and FaceBook for the latest news and information in the Queer Universe. From all of that I try to put together something that will hold your interest for a few minutes and keep you up to date on what's going on in the LGBT community.

This morning it's been a little tougher. Not much happened overnight. It's all a rehash of stuff that happened a few days ago.

The big news story is still the Times Square car bomb. The oil spill in the gulf is still slowly making it's way to the coastal areas and commercial fisherman are about to be destitute because of another major disaster. When are we going to get off fossil fuels already?!

In other news, there really isn't any news. Congress is still moving at a snail's pace, except on our issues, where there has been no movement at all. Celebrities are still chasing fame as if they'd die without it. (If only!)

Here at Morning Wood Acres, the sun is up, the birds are singing and as I look out my bedroom window I notice that the trees are filling in very nicely and I can barely see the neighbors' house through the woods. That's why I live in the country. No busy-body neighbors in your business all the time.

Every now and then I can hear the honking from the Canada geese that have taken up residence on a neighboring pond. I hope they stay over there. In past years, they've found their way to our yard and wreaked havoc. They're really hard to get rid of and they're mean. They take really big dumps all over the yard and eat all the duck food. Our ducks are terrified of them. It's kind of like the animal kingdom version of the bullies on the playground that steal your lunch money and give you an atomic wedgie and a swirlie to remember them by.

Let's see, what else is going on...? Oh yeah. Frank House and I are putting the finishing touches on Saturday's "Strength Through Diversity" workshop. It's really going to be an exciting and fun event and it's all about you. This is your opportunity to make your voice heard, share your stories, break down the walls that divide us and discuss concerns you have about the LGBT community.

Frank and I will be sharing hosting duties. Our facilitators are the fantastic staff of the Conflict Resolution Center. We've had some really great meetings about content and discussion topics and I'm really excited to be part of this event. Please, please, please come. We've got some great FREE giveaways, FREE Lunch and some great conversation. See Tuesday's post or the FaceBook event page for details. You can RSVP via the FaceBook page or by emailing me at rev.stevescyberpulpit@yahoo.com

Have a great day and I'd love to see you all on Saturday!

"Snowmageddon" Snowball Fight at DC's Dupont Circle (video)

What do thousands of Washingtonians do to shake off cabin fever during the worst snowstorm in recent memory? They do just what they did as kids, go out and play in it. Except, this is the 21st century. You don't just venture out into your snowbound neighborhood in the hopes of meeting up with your buddies any more. That would be an inefficient use of your time. You use social media to plan out every detail out in advance, including the "spontaneity".

That's exactly what happened Saturday in DC's Dupont Circle. The Washington Post reported up to 2000 participants, who showed up in response to two days of Twitter and Facebook updates promoting the event. Although there was a police presence, DC's finest remained on the perimeter and there were no reports of trouble.

FaceBook: My new addiction

Several weeks ago I got an e-mail alert saying someone had sent a message to my FaceBook page. Honestly, I'd forgotten that I had one. I had set up an account last year at some point but had never done anything with it. I checked the message and found it was from someone I really wasn't interested in reconnecting with, but decided to finish my profile and see if I could find people I know.

Over the last month, I've become hooked. I have 75 friends, mostly made up of family members, coworkers, bloggers, other political junkies and artists. I'd love it if my blog readers (both of you) would look up my page and add me as a friend (Click here.) It's a great way to interact and get your feedback.

You have to have a FaceBook account to view profiles, but it's free to set one up. Would love to hear from you.
