Note to our Straight Friends: You're Driving Us Nuts!

A study done by researchers at UCLA's School of Public Health revealed that 48% of gays, lesbians and bisexuals sought mental health care last year as compared to 22% of heterosexuals.

It's not what you might think. These folks are not seeking therapy to change their sexual orientation. The study shows that life is more stressful for queer folks because society in general makes it that way for us.

According to the study, women in general were most like to see a shrink. The group least likely to seek mental health counseling are heterosexual males. Wow! What a shocker.

Let's do the math. In 27 states we can legally be fired and denied housing for being gay.

We have no legal recognition of our relationships in all but a small handful of states and none on the federal level.

In most of the U.S., we can be labeled unfit parents and be denied custody and/or visitation rights to our kids and cannot adopt.

Gay youth are bullied, beaten and ostracized in school, rejected by their friends, families and churches and often end up living in the streets or getting shipped off the ex-gay camps.

Our leaders make promises to us to get elected, then ignore us, or pass more discriminatory laws, once they're in office.

The list could go on and on.

I like straight guys. Some of my best friends over the years have been straight guys. I suspect that I may even have some breeder-boys in my family. It's just really odd to me that the group of people that makes life so much more difficult for the rest of us due to their own insecurities, the group that is the most likely to be homophobic, racist and misogynistic -- you know, the group that runs everything -- is the group that thinks they don't need help.

Since we're all about health care reform these days, it seems to me that the most cost-effective approach to mental health would be to for every hetero male to have mandatory mental health counseling and leave the rest of us the fuck alone!

I'm just sayin'.
