In 1975, Janis Ian hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with her moving song about a plain, unpopular teenage girl trying to survive in a world run by popular, pretty cheerleaders. I remember watching her perform "At 17" on the very first episode of Saturday Night Live that year. The angst-ridden ballad won Ian a Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal - Female, beating out Linda Ronstadt, Olivia Newton-John and Helen Reddy.
In this video, the out and proud singer reflects on her platinum selling song during a live acoustic performance in 2008 in San Diego.
