Pop sensation and LGBT rights activist Lady Gaga will hold a rally calling for the repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell this afternoon in Portland, Maine. Gaga tweated to her 6 million fans yesterday, “Meet me in Portland, Maine 2moro to help repeal #DADT. I'm holding a Rally + speaking live in Deering Oaks Park.”
The pop singer, who swept the MTV Video Music Awards last week is working with Servicemembers Legal Defense Network (SLDN) in their home stretch push for repeal during this legislative session. Gaga, who attended the VMA's with four gay and lesbian former service members who were fired or quit because of DADT, released a video late last week calling on all of us to call our senators today at 202-224-3121 and tell them support full repeal.
SLDN's partnership with Gaga appears to be working. After her appearance on the "Ellen" show, where she encouraged viewers to visit the SLDN website, the organization reported over 107,000 hits.
The senate is scheduled to vote on the Defense Authorization Bill this week. The bill includes language for repealing the 17-year-old policy banning open service by gay, lesbian and bisexual service members. Sen. John "Grumpy Old Man" McCain has vowed to do whatever it takes to block repeal.
Make the call today: 202-224-3121.
