Maryland's Two-Faced Arora Supports Marriage Bill and Voter Initiative to Ban It

Maryland's Sam Arora proves you can live without a spine.
The case for same-sex marriage in Maryland gets even more bizarre with the news yesterday that waffling delegate Sam Arora, who was for marriage equality before he was against it, has given his half-hearted support for the bill he co-sponsored.

This morning, Arora posted the following message on his website, hoping to clarify his position:
"I have heard from constituents, friends, and advocates from across the spectrum of views and have thought about the issue of same-sex marriage extensively. I understand their concern—this is a very serious issue, and one that many people feel passionately about. As the vote drew nearer, I wrestled with this issue in a way I never had before, which led me to realize that I had some concerns about the bill. While I personally believe that Maryland should extend civil rights to same-sex couples through civil unions, I have come to the conclusion that this issue has such impact on the people of Maryland that they should have a direct say. I will vote to send the bill to the floor because it deserves an up-or-down vote. On the floor, I will vote to send the bill to the governor so that Marylanders can ultimately decide this issue at the polls. I think that is appropriate."
In other words, for the last two years, this spineless, wishy-washy, indecisive moron hadn't really thought about marriage equality and what it means to those couples and families who are denied equal protection under the law, even though he worked very closely with Equality Maryland, actively sought and received their support, accepted the funds they helped him raise and co-sponsored the very bill that is now up for a vote.

But wait, there's more!

Arora has decided to support the Marriage Equality Bill, but just in case he runs afoul of the Christianists, he's hedging his bets by coming out in favor of a voter referendum that would undo the bill he now says he will help pass by voting for it in the current session.

I have some questions for the citizens of my home state.

How did you ever vote for this guy? Did you not check out his background? Weren't there any signs anywhere about this guy's Jekyll/Hyde personality issues? How hard is it to keep your word when you've built your whole career on equal protection for all the citizens of your state?

Please tell me you're not going to let him get away with this. These are some pretty serious character flaws. As soon as this vote is over, you all need to seriously start looking for a more stable individual to run against Sam Arora. He can wrestle with his conscience on his own time. Thousands of people's lives are being affected by his lack of conviction.

Does Sam Arora really think he can have it both ways by supporting this bill and then letting the relationships of tax-paying Marylanders be determined by mob rule, as dictated by bigoted slugs like Maggie Gallagher?

Grow a spine and lead, Sam! It's what you were elected to do.
