Trevor Project Opens Call-in Center in Harvey Milk's Camera Shop (video)

Harvey Milk filling in for Mayor Moscone for a...Image via WikipediaWhen the Human Rights Campaign purchased the building that once housed the historic camera shop once owned by slain LGBT rights pioneer Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to public office, our community expressed near unanimous outrage that the nation's largest and wealthiest LGBT lobbying group would be capitalizing on the landmark.

Although the HRC brand is prominently displayed above the door, the location has been repurposed as an LGBT youth suicide prevention call center for The Trevor Project.

In addition to using the location as his campaign headquarters, Milk also fielded numerous calls from desperate queer kids from all over the country who had nowhere else to turn. Harvey was an inspiration then and his work can now continue into the future with the opening of The Harvey Milk Call Center, which held its grand opening Sunday on his 81st birthday.
